Rairaiken Ramen

Rairaiken ramen restaurant is a real gem within the town of Kobayashi. Located next to Saboribar in Akamatsudōri with its beautiful koi cruising around a little waterway in downtown Kobayashi, it offers the opportunity to sit outside while eating.  Thanks to its history and remarkable reputation, no matter what time of day you go, it is generally crowded. During rush hour you may have to squeeze in to sit down in between the locals.

There is no unnecessary fuss at Rairaiken: cooking is the owners main concern. And with your first slurp, you will immediately understand why this little restaurant has been around forever (just about forever) and has always been popular.

Rairaiken’s specialty is rich tonkotsu ramen. Surprisingly, this dish is quite light in flavor. The noodles are always cooked to perfection and of infinite finesse. If you have just came back from a hike on Takachiho, then go for the chāshū-men which offers additional slices of roast pork on top of the noodles. If you prefer to have your fill of veggies, then try the champon, ramen with much thicker noodles in a creamy broth with a mountain of colorful healthy yumminess on top.

Sidenote: Rairaiken’s curry is awesome! Treat yourself with “mini-curry” on the side.
